About the Artists
The World’s Worst Wagga Guild was established in 2023 on unceded Wurundjeri-woiwurrung Land by Fiona Waters and Ruby Hoppen. Fiona and Ruby are wonky scrap quilters who focus on sustainable textile practices and bringing people together. World’s Worst Wagga Guild works to democratise art making, foster community connections, promote wellbeing, reduce textile waste and increase people’s creative confidence.
Fiona’s work expresses their queer identity, and Ruby’s seeks to reveal the experience of single motherhood. They believe that giving it your ‘worst’ can in fact be giving it your ‘best’ – this is why the Guild was named after the ‘world’s worst wagga’ which lives at the National Wool Museum! It is a quilt that was declared the worst in the world but is now an important piece of Australian quilting history.
