Event Description
Stitch and Yarn with Kait James

Join Kait James for a relaxed stitch and yarn workshop. Participants are invited to bring their own artwork or textile piece to work on. This session is an opportunity to spend time making and developing work at your own pace in a supportive environment. If you don’t already have a work in progress, materials will be supplied to start a new piece.

Kait will also share insights into her practice and discuss the work featured in the exhibition, offering context around her use of textiles and storytelling. No formal experience is required, this workshop is open to all skill levels.

About the Artist:

As a proud Wadawurrung woman, Kait’s work explores her identity as an Australian with both Anglo and Indigenous heritage. Her work asks questions relating to identity, perception and our knowledge of Australia’s Indigenous communities.
Utilising Punch Needling techniques, she embroiders kitsch found materials, such as souvenir tea towels, that reference colonial settlements and histories, and subverts them with Indigenous imagery and familiar references. Through the use of humour and vivid colours, Kait addresses the way white western culture has dominated Australia’s history, and her personal reflections on her Indigenous heritage
