Reprogramming Disposability

Reprogramming Disposability is Deakin University’s contribution to Geelong Design Week, presenting design responses to the escalating problem of fast‑fashion waste. Australia remains one of the world’s highest textile consumers, and this exhibition confronts that reality through a series of chairs crafted from discarded garments and textile offcuts.

Developed within design studios exploring the productive city, the works investigate how architecture can interrupt cycles of disposability and enable localised, circular fashion systems. The chairs examine the relationship between the body, consumption, and waste, positioning design as a critical tool for making the impacts of fast fashion visible. It invites Geelong Design Week audiences to consider how creative practice can reshape the future of responsible production.
