Life in Australia: Geelong at Shorts Place Launch

Look back at Geelong’s History

In partnership with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) the City of Greater Geelong is proud and excited to present Life in Australia: Geelong (1966) at the Shorts Place Projection Space from the 15 May - 18 June nightly from dusk. Tying in with the finale of the Australian Heritage Festival, the film presents a nostalgic picture of life in Geelong in the mid-1960s.

Directed by Antonio Colacino, the 20-minute promotional film was produced by the Department of Immigration, to entice immigrants from Europe to immigrate for the opportunities Australia provides. Part of a series of films produced for major cities, Life in Australia: Geelong gives a glimpse of everyday life in the city.  Designed to motivate industrial workers to come for work, the film depicts many sites of the city in their heyday; from the grain elevators, refinery, cement works and of course the Ford factory. With depictions of everyday life and customs. The film is a rosy picture from a certain point in history and invites the viewer to think of the ways in which Geelong has progressed socially over the intervening decades.

The importance of local story has been a recurring theme voiced in feedback on the community engagement for a new Public Art Strategy 2025 | Have Your Say and as part of the City’s Shorts Place Projection Space program.  This program will continue to explore opportunities to showcase our unique stories and celebrate our culture.

In presenting Life in Australia: Geelong, we hope to spark the recollection of shared memories. On Thursday 22 May from 17:30 to 18:30 there will be a celebration of the film and local community members will be invited to share their stories. It promises to be a night to remember.

So when you’re walking through Little Malop Street on a lovely Geelong evening over the next month, be sure to look out for the film in Shorts Place and stay to see Geelong’s history projected.
